St. David's HealthCare and Heart Hospital of Austin to Support Austin-Based Women's Cycling Team, Team Ride Red, During Race Across America

AUSTIN, Texas-On February 16, 2011, St. David's HealthCare and Heart Hospital of Austin announced support for an Austin-based team of four women who will cycle 3,000 miles across America to raise awareness of heart disease, the number one killer of women. The group, known as Team Ride Red, is riding as part of the Race Across America (RAAM), one the most respected and longest-running endurance sports events in the world that serves as a platform for raising money for charitable causes.

"We are happy to support Team Ride Red in its endeavor to raise awareness of heart disease in our community and across America," David Laird, chief executive officer of Heart Hospital of Austin, said. "We have a common goal-to educate women about the signs of a heart attack-and we applaud the members of this team for their efforts."

The team includes Susan Farago, Carol Pope, Vicki Ford and Sue Schrader. The women are all over 40 years of age, and they understand the importance of women's health and fitness at any age.

One in three American women die from cardiovascular disease, and 90 percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease. Team Ride Red has partnered with the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women initiative to help give a voice to this silent killer.

"It has been so energizing sharing our team's goals and mission with the people we have met," Ford said. "Not only are they excited about our team and the race, they want to support us and share our goal of educating women about the signs, symptoms and prevention of heart disease. With the support of sponsors, including St. David's

HealthCare and Heart Hospital of Austin, we can't wait to get to the starting line in Oceanside, California."

The Race Across America is celebrating its 30th year of coast-to-coast bicycle racing, as more than 250 competitors from 25 countries cross 12 states from the start line in Oceanside, California to the finish line in Annapolis, Maryland. Solo riders have up to 12 days to complete the distance, and teams have up to nine days. Race Across America participants raise more than $2 million for charity annually.
