St. David's HealthCare CEO Jon M. Foster Tapped to Lead $11-Billion HCA Hospital Group

AUSTIN-Jon M. Foster, who has served as St. David's HealthCare president and CEO for the past 10 years, has been promoted to lead an $11-billion group of hospitals for HCA. As HCA group president, Foster will oversee operations encompassing 52,000 employees and 47 hospitals across all of Texas, Oklahoma and Colorado and in Wichita, Kansas.

Foster will remain in Austin and base the HCA hospital group here. In addition, Foster will continue to serve St. David's HealthCare in his newly appointed role as vice chairman of the board of directors for St. David's HealthCare.

On Wednesday, Feb. 9, the board of St. David's HealthCare unanimously voted to promote C. David Huffstutler to fill the opening created by Foster's promotion. In his new role as St. David's HealthCare CEO, Huffstutler will interface directly with Foster but have ultimate accountability to the St. David's HealthCare board. Huffstutler currently serves as the chief executive officer of St. David's Medical Center.

"We are extraordinarily proud of Jon, and we're thrilled that he will be joining our board in this new leadership capacity," C.W. Hetherly, chairman of the St. David's HealthCare board, said. "Further, we are fortunate to have someone with David Huffstutler's strong capability and leadership skills to take the helm as the new CEO of St. David's HealthCare."

"It has been my honor to serve as the St. David's HealthCare leader during these years of exceptional growth and success," Foster said. "The physicians, staff and leadership team are second to none. I'm certain St. David's will continue to advance its life-giving mission and to prosper under David Huffstutler's leadership."

During Foster's tenure, St. David's HealthCare has undergone an ambitious $800-million, multi-facility expansion and today ranks as one of the largest healthcare systems in Texas. With 7,100 staff and more than 2,000 physicians, the organization has been recognized nationally for its level of clinical care and service. St. David's HealthCare has recruited a number of nationally and internationally renowned physicians and treats patients from every state in the nation and 20 different countries.

Foster has served on numerous national and state-level governing boards and is a past chair of the Texas Hospital Association Board of Trustees. In addition, he serves as a board member for the American Hospital Association Regional Policy Board, the Austin Economic Development Corporation, the Texas Quality Coalition, and The University of Texas College of Pharmacy Advisory Board. He holds the distinction of being a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. In 2000, the 30,000+ member American College of Healthcare Executives bestowed upon Foster the prestigious Robert S. Hudgens Memorial Award naming him the Healthcare Executive of the Year for the United States and Canada.

David Huffstutler came to St. David's HealthCare in 2007 as chief executive officer of St. David's Medical Center, which has entailed leading a 350-bed, acute-care hospital; a dedicated 64-bed rehabilitation hospital; as well as providing oversight for St. David's Georgetown Hospital and Heart Hospital of Austin. Under his leadership, in 2010 the facility was named to the prestigious list of 100 Top Hospitals by Thomson Reuters, a leading provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of healthcare.

Prior to that, Huffstutler served for three years as chief executive officer of Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital in Houston, and before that, for seven years in various hospital operations leadership roles in the Houston market for HCA. Before joining HCA, Huffstutler spent nearly 15 years in management positions for The Methodist Health Care System, Houston.

Huffstutler is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Texas Hospital Association. He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
