A good night's sleep starts at Heart Hospital of Austin. Patients who come to the Sleep Center are typically fatigued from lack of sleep. Heavy snoring, pauses in sleep, restless legs, and high blood pressure are some common signs of sleep disorders.
An overnight stay typically begins with an educational video followed by an explanation from a trained sleep technician on what to expect. The technician then attaches electrodes to the patient's head and chest to monitor vital signs throughout the night. In addition, an oximeter will be placed on the patient's finger to detect the amount of oxygen present in the extremities. Once connected to the diagnostic equipment, patients can watch television, read a book and fall asleep in the comfort of a private, hotel-like room.
Throughout the night, a trained sleep technician will monitor:
- Airflow
- Heart rate
- Brain waves
- Stages of sleep
- Eye movement
- Quality of sleep
- Patient movement
A board-certified cardiologist will analyze the results and determine the impact this has on the body including cardiac effects. The entire study is painless and completed on an outpatient basis.
Once diagnosed, the physician will prescribe a treatment option. One type of treatment is a continuous
positive airway pressure machine (CPAP) for treatment. This allows the airways to remain open throughout the night to prevent the vicious cycle of an adrenaline rush followed by a cough, loss of oxygen or constant movement. Other treatment options include surgery or medication. Patients using CPAP machines generally end up feeling more awake and refreshed in the mornings and less fatigued throughout the day.
